Opening Day CANCELLED

Hi all.

I'm sitting at the diamonds in a flooded car park and it's raining - looks like we'll have to hit the reboot key and postpone our Opening Weekend until next week.

To clarify - KiwiBall is cancelled this morning.

Enjoy your weekend and we'll see you next week.

KiwiBall starts Friday night!

Hi folks

KiwiBall Spring Training begins this Friday!  In advance of our season kick off, here are a few bits of information and a big request for help.

Start time

Friday night training:

Both Junior Sluggers (5-6 year olds) and Sluggers (7-8 year olds) will start at 5:30pm.  The Juniors run for 45 mins and the Sluggers run for an hour.

Saturday morning game:

Meet time is 8:30am for warm ups with games starting at 9am.  Again, 45 mins for Junior Sluggers, 1 hour for Sluggers.

Location

We'll be on the touch rugby fields over the far side of the Number 1 diamond (the first diamond as you walk into Lloyd Elsmore Park from the baseball car park off Cascades Road (opposite the vege wholesaler near Ben Lomand Cres).

Weather cancellation

If we are uncertain about the weather, and/or the fields are too wet, we'll cancel the training or game.  Cancellation will be via the KiwiBall facebook page and on this site.  For training, we'll notify of cancellation no later than 4pm.  For the game Saturday, we'll notify of cancellation by 8am.

Parent help - Junior Sluggers

We're looking for help with coaching teams once the Spring Training period has ended.  In the meantime, we'll need all the parent help we can get - particularly at the Junior Slugger level.  If you are willing to help out with coaching, please put your hand up to assist during the Spring Training period.  I've put together a detailed format for week one of the Junior Sluggers training and game day below so everyone understands what we want the players to do.

Please either email or phone/text me if you are able to help out - or even just make yourself known to me on Friday night.  If you're able to help out, print out and bring along a copy of the Junior Sluggers training / game format as a guide.

I'll be there working with the Sluggers grade, but I'll also need help to wrangle the players, so parents with players at that level, please don't be afraid to step forward.  I've included a brief outline of what we'll be working on for week 1 below as well.

Format:

Junior Sluggers - Friday night training:

Juniors - Base names, timed home run and a game.
Helpers required - at least 2 parents per diamond

Learn the bases:

After a quick warm up and stretch (jumping jacks, stretch to the sky, bend to the ground), the players gather around home base.  Everyone points at the base and yells as loudly as they can "HOME" three times.  Then get everyone to run to 1st base (everyone points at the base and yells "base 1" three times), 2nd base ("base 2"), 3rd base ("base 3") and returns to "home!".

Timed home run:

Line all the players up at home base.  The line follows the leader running around the bases (no overtaking) jumping on each base and yelling out it's name, finishing at home base.  After this practice, do it again but "time" it.  See if everyone can set a world record!

Game:

For week one, this game will be the format of the game used on Saturday morning as well.

Split the players into two teams - one team bats, one team fields.  After everyone has batted on the batting team, swap over.

Batting team
Line the team up away from home base.  Set up the batting tee on home base and have one ball to hit.  Use one bat only for safety reasons.  Bring up one batter at a time with a helmet on, everyone else remains seated in line and cheers for the batter.

Before the first batter, explain to the team what they need to do:  Have the batter hit the ball off the tee and, once the ball is hit, the player carefully DROPS THE BAT - NEVER THROW THE BAT, and run a home run jumping on each base and yelling out it's name as they go.

Be patient with the batter.  Get them to focus on the ball (batting technique is not too important at this stage).  If they swing and miss three times, have a parent help them make contact.  Watch out for enthusiastic swings of the bat!

Fielding team
Help the players to put on a baseball glove (they go on their non dominant hand, their dominant hand is for throwing ie a right handed thrower wears their glove on their left hand).  Get enough baseballs so you have at least one per fielder.  The parent helping the fielding team should stand near base two with the baseballs.

Spread the players out behind the red safety cones to avoid being hit by well hit baseballs.  The area between home base and the cones is RED HOT LAVA and so must not be stepped in!  When the batter hits the ball, the parent throws the fielders balls out to the fielders - each one fields one ball only.  They then run the balls back in to base 2 back to the parent helper.  Repeat for each batter.  See who can get their ball back the fastest!

Junior Sluggers - Saturday game:

Warm up - a game of "Stuck in the mud" or something similar and some fun stretches to warm up (eg star jumps, standing jumps, arm circles)

Practice running the bases again and make sure they yell out the name of each base as they jump on them!  Have them all stand in the middle of the diamond.  Yell out a base name and get them to run to it - see who can remember the best!  If Friday was washed out, then go through the learning the base name drill instead to teach the base names.

Play the game as per Friday night training.

Sluggers - Friday training

Warm up game of Stuck in the Mud and stretches.
Learning "ready position", "fielding position", "throwing position" and "hitting position".
Learning the fielding positions - and then a test.
Working on catching basics - glove off, then glove on.
Working on ground ball basics - glove off, then glove on.
Hitting off the tee - two stations, more if required.

Sluggers - Saturday game:
Warm up as per Friday night, go through catching basics drills then working on throwing basics (4 seam grip and arm path).
For the game, using tees to begin with, but progressing to coach pitch from the 2nd inning for the more confident players.  Hitters run until the ball is touched by a fielder, and then remains at the base they're approaching.  Fielders throw to that base.

Welcome to KiwiBall for the 2017/18 season!

Registration for Kiwi Ball at HP Baseball for the 2017/18 has opened! Click here to register NOW!

Where are we:  Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga.  Entrance off Cascades Road (opposite Cascades Fruit and Vege / Cascades Road shops). Map to HP Hawks Baseball, Lloyd Elsmore Park

Ages:
HP Junior Sluggers grade ages 5 - 6 (although we do accept 4 year olds turning 5 during the season)
HP Sluggers grade aged 8 or under as of 1 January 2018.
Players aged 9 as of 1 January 2018 play U11s baseball.

Please note that due to player numbers we may need to move players up or down between these grades in order to get complete teams.  We'll do our best to work with the parents and players to make this work for everyone, but we do ask for your understanding as it's often a no win situation putting the teams together where the player numbers don't cooperate.

What you need (for the regular season onward):
Shoes/sneakers, socks and undies - we supply everything else! (ie pants, shirts, baseball caps and all playing equipment).  Every player is even given their own soft core flexi-baseball, and the shirts and caps are for the players to keep - you only need return the baseball pants at the end of the season.  Running/casual shoes are acceptable (at this age we don't want kids wearing cleats so as to avoid injuries to other players), but no jandals, sandals or bare feet please.

Want to help out?  Get involved helping out as a coach, assistant coach, 'dugout' parent or just wrangling KiwiBallers.  Comment here, go on facebook, or sign up when you register.

Season structure - Spring Training/Regular Season

This season we are trialing a new format for our KiwiBall season.  The reason for this is we want to give as many people as we can access to our awesome game as possible, without parents having to commit to playing a full season up front before they know anything about our game.  One of the most common barriers for parents to signing up the children to KiwiBall is they "don't know if he/she will like it".

We all know that our kids LOVE KiwiBall, so in order to help out parents who may be unsure, we will have a 4 week "spring training" before we start our KiwiBall games proper.  There will be no requirement to register for our KiwiBall Spring Training, and it will be free for all to attend.  Of course, all those who register will get email communication directly from the Club.  Non registered Spring Training attendees will need to rely on checking this blog and our KiwiBall facebook page for information on changes, cancellations and other communications.

Please help us get word to your local school and families about our Spring Training opportunity and let's get our Howick-Pakuranga area humming with baseball!  You can send them to this blog for KiwiBall program details, or to hphawks.co.nz for more information on our Club.

KiwiBall Spring Training will be held Friday evenings/Saturday mornings - exactly as we have run for the last 6 years or so.  Instead of allocating teams from day one, during Spring Training, we will train as a group on Friday nights and play pick up games on Saturday mornings.  There will be no set teams, and no baseball shirts or pants will be issued until the regular season starts.  In every other way KiwiBall will run exactly as it has in previous years.

Please read through the rest of the page, and if you have any questions, please contact me through the comments on this site or facebook.

Key dates

Spring Training: Friday 27 October - 18 November (4 weeks).

Regular Season: Friday 24 November - March 2018 with a break over the Christmas period.

Season dates:  27 October - 16 December 2017, 2 February - 16 March 2017 (14 weeks)

Games:  Saturday mornings 8:30am - 10am

Training times:
 Junior Sluggers - Friday 5:30 - 6:15pm
Sluggers - Friday 5:30 - 6:30pm (to be confirmed with coaches)

Cost: $90 per player.

Even though Spring Training will be no cost, we encourage you to register as early as possible.  This helps us with planning for the season, working out how many coaches, uniforms and how much equipment we will need for the season.

There will be no need to make any payment for any child to play during Spring Training.  However, in order to help the Club with collection of fees, registration fees must be paid before the player will be allocated to a team for the regular season season (ie BEFORE 18 November).  We will also be able to issue playing pants and caps once full registration fees are paid (team shirts will be issued for the first round of the regular season once teams are finalised).

Our fee covers all costs of putting a player on the diamond (ie cap, shirt, affiliation fees) on a break even basis.  As such, we can't provide discounts for players wanting to play only part of a season, nor can we issue refunds once the season has started as the costs have already been incurred and can't otherwise be recovered.  For those families that need it, payment by installments can be arranged with the Club.  The first installment of any arrangement must be made before a player will be allocated to a team.

Baseball Pants Amnesty

Please, please, please, if you did not return your baseball pants last season, please let us know so we can plan for this coming season.  Also, if you know of anyone who didn't return their playing pants from last season, please nudge them along to do the right thing.  No harm, no foul - we just want to make sure all the kids have another great season.

There are often changes in the lead up to the season, so please check back here often leading in to the season to get the most up to date information possible.  We will have a parents meeting at the muster on the 27th of October.

Info for new parents signing up after 19 November 2016

Hello and welcome to Howick-Pakuranga Baseball Club (aka HP Hawks) and our KiwiBall program!

We have a number of parents expressing an interest in joining our Club, and the following is all the information you need to know about how the process will work.

First, check out the "Welcome... " post in the blog, which is a mega info dump on how our program operates.  Find it here:

Welcome to kiwiball for the 2016/17 season!

For players joining us over our last four weeks leading up to Christmas, here are the additional details you need to know:

In order to complete your child's registration, please follow the link below, click on "Please Register Me Now" and enter your details:

We will be forming teams for the newly registered players over the next four weeks in the lead up to our Christmas break based on the number of registrations. Until the new teams are formed, all new players will train and and play with our existing teams, or in a newly formed team, depending on numbers attending each week.  Our last game before Christmas is on Saturday 17th December.

At the commencement of the second half of our season we'll assign all our new players into teams.  We restart after Christmas for training on Friday 3rd February, games 4th February.

Please note, any players that have not registered and paid their fees (or set up a payment arrangement with the Club) will not be placed into teams.  We understand it can be difficult to cover fees, especially in the lead up to Christmas.  If you would like to set up a payment arrangement, please contact your KiwiBall coordinator at HP Baseball who will be able to assist.

Once registered and paid up, players will be issued with baseball pants (which get returned at the end of the season), and a baseball to keep.  Team shirts and caps, which the players get to keep, will be issued at the beginning of the second half of our season.

Here's looking forward to seeing you over the Summer for a heap of KiwiBall awesomeness!!
